The college application process can feel like a marathon, but breaking it down into manageable steps makes it far less daunting. Here’s a month-by-month guide to help you stay on track and submit your best application.

Summer Before Senior Year: Laying the Foundation

  • Research, Research, Research: Now's the time to explore colleges that genuinely interest you. Dig into their websites, virtual tours, program offerings, and student life. Create a list of colleges you are interested in – don't worry about narrowing it down too much yet.

  • Reflect and Brainstorm: What are your academic strengths, extracurricular passions, and career aspirations? Start thinking about potential essay topics that showcase your unique qualities and experiences.

  • Get Organized: Create a system (spreadsheet, folder, online tool) to track deadlines, application requirements, login credentials, and contact information for each college. Trust me, this will be a lifesaver!

  • Consider Standardized Tests: If you plan to take the SAT or ACT, research test dates and registration deadlines. Many students take these tests for the first time in the late summer or early fall. Start your preparation!

  • Talk to Your Career and College Specialist and/or your School Counselor: Schedule a meeting with your career and college specialist and/or your high school counselor to discuss your college plans, transcript requirements, and any school-specific application procedures.

  • Visit Campuses (If Possible): If you have the opportunity, visiting college campuses can provide invaluable insights into the atmosphere and fit.

  • Start Working on Essays: Begin drafting your main college essay and any supplemental essays. Give yourself plenty of time for revisions and feedback.

September: Getting Serious

  • Finalize Your College List: Aim for a balanced list of "reach," "target," and "safety" schools. Consider factors like program strength, location, size, and cost.

  • Identify Recommenders: Think about teachers and counselors who know you well and can speak to your academic abilities and character. Ask them politely if they're willing to write letters of recommendation, providing them with your resume and any specific instructions from the colleges.

  • Understand Application Platforms: Familiarize yourself with the Common Application, Coalition Application, or individual college application portals. Create accounts as needed.

  • Request Financial Aid Information: Begin researching financial aid options and deadlines for each college. Start gathering necessary financial documents.

October: Application Focus

  • Refine Your Essays: Seek feedback on your essays from teachers, counselors, or trusted adults. Polish your writing for clarity, grammar, and impact.

  • Complete Application Forms: Fill out the application forms carefully and accurately. Pay close attention to deadlines and required information.

  • Prepare Activity Lists and Resumes: Detail your extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and any relevant experiences.

  • Consider Early Decision/Early Action: If you're certain about a particular college, research the deadlines and requirements for Early Decision or Early Action. Understand the binding nature of Early Decision.

  • Continue Standardized Testing (If Needed): If you're retaking the SAT or ACT, register for upcoming test dates.

  • Complete Financial Aid Applications (FAFSA, CSS Profile): Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS Profile (if required by your colleges) as soon as they become available.

November: Deadline Crunch

  • Finalize and Submit Early Applications: Ensure all components of your Early Decision/Early Action applications (including essays, recommendations, and transcripts) are submitted well before the deadlines.

  • Continue Working on Regular Applications: Maintain momentum on your regular decision applications.

  • Follow Up with Recommenders: Gently remind your recommenders about upcoming deadlines.

December: Wrapping Up Fall Deadlines

  • Submit Remaining Fall Application Deadlines: Focus on submitting all applications with deadlines in December or January. Double-check every section before hitting "submit."

  • Thank Your Recommenders: Send thank-you notes to your teachers and counselors for writing your letters of recommendation.

January - February: Winter Wait and Continued Effort

  • Continue Applying (If Needed): Some colleges have later application deadlines.

  • Scholarship Search: Actively search and apply for external scholarships.

  • Monitor Your Email and Application Portals: Stay vigilant for updates and requests from the colleges you've applied to.

  • Prepare for Interviews (If Offered): Practice your interviewing skills.

March - April: Decision Time!

  • Receive Admission Decisions: Colleges will begin releasing admission decisions. Celebrate your acceptances and carefully review your options.

  • Compare Financial Aid Packages: Analyze the financial aid offers from each college. Understand the terms and conditions.

  • Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to contact the admissions and financial aid offices with any questions you have.

  • Attend Admitted Student Days (If Possible): These events can help you make your final decision.

May: Making Your Choice

  • National College Decision Day (Typically May 1st): This is the deadline to formally accept admission and submit your deposit to the college you've chosen.

  • Notify Other Colleges: Politely decline admission offers from the colleges you won't be attending.

  • Celebrate Your Achievement! You've navigated a significant milestone.

Beyond May: The Final Steps

  • Complete Housing Forms and Orientation Information: Follow the instructions from your chosen college.

  • Prepare for College! Get excited for the next chapter!
