Even though mental illness is becoming less taboo in society, it seems it is being glossed over. The general message that is given indicates that it is common to feel anxious because of everything that is on our “to do” list. But those who are diagnosed with anxiety know that it is much more than that and it can literally become debilitating. I truly feel that once we begin to truly talk about mental illness and the impact it has on people we can start making a big difference.
It has been shown that people who effectively deal with their mental illness tend to do so because they have support and understanding from people who are in power (www.chronicle.com). Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of and it is important that we talk about it openly. If we are lucky enough to become a support person it is imperative that we listen and deliver on our promises, it can truly save a life.
People who mask their mental illness make it more difficult for those who can’t. Transparency is key to supporting not only yourself but also others. If you are suffering from mental illness it is important to acknowledge it and find what works for you, if you need to ask for accommodations don’t be afraid to do so. You need to do what is best for you and what will help you be as successful as possible.
