How Do I Know If a School is the “Right Fit” for Me?

alyssazemple

The process of searching for the “right fit” school can be overwhelming. There are so many variables to consider and you are always going to question whether or not you are making the right decision. In order to be successful and get the most out of your experience it is important that you find a school that challenges you but doesn’t overwhelm you - this can be a very blurry line.

Here are some things you will want to consider when searching for your potential school:

Preferred program:

This question alone can bring about some anxiety. It feels like this is the magic question everybody asks you staring at a very young age. If you don’t know what you would like to major in yet, this might be a good time to take some career assessments to give you some direction. I would recommend that you have some idea on what you would like to major in by your junior year of high school. This gives you some time to prepare yourself and take advantage of opportunities to advance yourself while still in high school.

Social scene:

Think about the type of social activities you want to be part of. Do you want a larger school that is big into athletics, has fraternities/sororities or do you prefer a smaller school that has a few student clubs and is a close knit community. You want to ensure that you feel comfortable on campus and can see yourself succeeding; this will help set the foundation for success.

Surrounding environment:

Do you like the community at large? Look into how you will get around campus and the larger community, specifically when it is raining or snowing. Do you like the nearby town or do you feel isolated? The surrounding community can tell you a lot about the environment at the college.

Climate:

This sort of goes hand in hand with the environment. Do you enjoy experiencing the different seasons throughout the year or would you prefer a warm climate all year long? This can help create a comfortable foundation for you to become successful. Anything you can do to make yourself feel “at home” will make the transition easier.

Activities and opportunities:

It is important to look into different activities and opportunities that are available to you. Do you like athletics? If so, you may want to check out their athletic facilities. How about theater and music? If so, take a look at their theater programs and venues. Do they have intramurals or student clubs that you would be interested in joining? Have you always dreamt about studying abroad, if so do they have a study abroad program that you could be part of?

College costs:

The cost of attending college is always a concern. You want to make sure it is affordable and is able to offer you a financial aid package that is realistic. There are many things that can help offset the cost of college and you want to make sure you don’t build up student debt that is impossible to pay off.
