Some of you may have heard about this already but if you haven’t heard and have spent time in the foster care system (or know somebody who has) this is a great opportunity for you! Starting in the fall of 2022 a new grant in Minnesota will help students pay for college tuition, room and board and other expenses for Minnesotans who have spent time in the foster care system (www.startribune.com).
This grant is designed to cover all costs for the student that are not already covered by scholarships and traditional state and federal aid. Students who qualify for this grant can receive the money for up to three years if they are pursuing a two-year degree and up to five years if they are pursuing a bachelor's degree (www.startribune.com). This is one less thing that children in foster care will need to stress about and it can be enough to motivate them to pursue their dreams.
This grant will help students pursue their dream without worrying about how they will afford it. In order to be considered for this grant you need to be a Minnesota resident who is younger than 27 years old, and have been in the foster care system at the age of 13 or older. There are many teens that could benefit from this, for instance in the state of Minnesota there were approximately 4,900 teens in foster care in 2018 (www.startribune.com). The challenge now is to get the word out to students and families that qualify for this grant.
