Opportunities for Workers in Minnesota

alyssazemple

It is no surprise that the economy has been turbulent the last few years. There are many reasons why this has occurred but we need to look at the fact that there is a strong demand for workers in the state of Minnesota. According to a Job Vacancy Survey that was conducted by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), for every unemployed Minnesotan there are more than two open positions available. On the bright side it presents opportunities for people who are looking for work but on the other hand it presents challenges for employers (DEED).

The Job Vacancy Survey has shown that the Health Care & Social Assistance industry had the most job vacancies, followed by Retail Trade, Accommodation & Food Services, and Manufacturing. These four industries account for two-thirds of the total openings in the state (DEED).

The priorities that are addressed in the One Minnesota Budget in regards to the workforce include training programs to help Minnesotans prepare for careers in caring professions, manufacturing, tech and other high growth industries. The Drive for 5 Workforce Fund will prepare the workforce to enter five of the most critical occupational categories in the state which are high-growth jobs and have family-sustaining wages. These five occupations fall under: technology, caring professions, education, manufacturing and trades (DEED).

In order to fill some of the vacancies it is important to prepare our youth to enter the workforce. Expanding Minnesota’s Youth at Work, Minnesota Youth Program and YouthBuild programs will be imperative in order to help our economy grow because this will allow more youth to enter into the workforce. In order to accomplish this the Governor and Lieutenant Governor recommend doubling the existing funding for youth workforce development (DEED). In order to get our youth motivated to enter the workforce we need to give them the skills necessary to be successful and help them see the benefits of contributing to our society.

If you know of any youth who could use some help and guidance in this area I would be happy to help, you can reach out to me at info@atozeducationalconsulting.com or 612-735-1261.
