Oftentimes when people talk about higher education their focus is on four-year institutions. However, it has been found that community colleges enroll more than 40% of all undergraduates in the nation. Students that enroll in community colleges are often non-traditional students; adult learners, low-income, single parents, first-generation students, and veterans.
Community colleges focus on partnering with the workforce so that they can offer programs that give families a way to move forward. Community colleges are probably the most responsive to meeting the workforce needs; when students finish their program at a community college they often walk away with family-sustaining wage jobs.
Our country needs higher education more today than at any other point in our history. It is imperative that college administrators and instructors put the needs of their students first and provide the support and resources that are needed for them to succeed.
