Your Mental Health While Away at College

In my opinion the foundation for success starts with your mental health. In order to be successful and meet your goals you need to be mentally healthy. Mental health has been a topic of concern lately. Overall, the mental health of society has been declining due in part to the rise of social media, the pandemic, and the lack of mental health support.

In the past our mental health seemed to be a taboo topic and people were often faking their own happiness. It is now becoming more and more normalized to discuss mental health concerns and to seek out the support that is needed.

Leaving for college and being on your own for the first time can be very overwhelming and bring a mix of emotions ranging from excitement to anxiousness. This tends to be the first time many students get to choose what they do in regards to their education and their life; up until the time they enter college they have been told where to go to school and when. This freedom is often a welcome sign for students but is also a little nerve wracking. It is important that you identify your support network and create a ‘safety net’ while you are away from your family.

The current model at many colleges has various offices that deal with student issues so it can feel that no one truly understands how the pieces fit together. Some colleges are looking at incorporating mental-health breaks within the academic calendar. This may help with decompressing and dealing with the stressors of college. As part of this mental-health break it is important that students are connected with a trusted adult within the college that knows them well and cares about them. It is important that this person doesn’t only talk about their grades but also talks about their experience which can include anything ranging from romantic relationships, breakups, family issues, roommate struggles, etc. (www.chronicle.com).

If you or somebody you know are struggling with mental health issues please reach out to the SAMSA hotline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357).
